It was the largest Hungarian city in the 18th century and it is one of the more important cultural centres of Hungary. Debrecen was also the capital city of the country during the war for independence against the Habsburg dinasty in 1848-1849, and in 1944-1945 at the beginning of the Soviet occupation during the last period of World War II .
