Air Transportation to/from Hungary

Hungary has two airports, which are making Hungary and Debrecen well connected to major hubs in Europe and the Middle East.

Debrecen Airport

Debrecen airport (https://www.debrecenairport.com/en) offers 12 direct connections to international destinations, but also it is possible to travel to Debrecen with multiple flights.

Taxis are the quickest way to get from the airport to Debrecen downtown (approximate fare: the equivalent of 10 Euros). You can use the “Bolt” application to order a ride.

During the day bus number #Airport1 and #Airport2 departs to the city, but these are very infrequent.

Budapest Airport

Budapest Airport (https://www.bud.hu/en) offers more than 60 direct connections to international destinations.

From the Budapest Airport you need to go to the “Ferihegy train station” (onward: FTS) and travel to Debrecen.

To FTS you can travel by taxi (suggest to use “Bolt” application) or with the bus number #200E (Recent schedule: https://bkk.hu/apps/menetrendek/storage/menetrendek/734/76649.pdf).

During the day train departs every hour from FTS to Debrecen (you can buy your ticket here: https://jegy.mav.hu/). The travel from FTS is 2 hours and 8 minutes (IC) or 2 hours and 38 minutes (fast train).

By car

Regular documents (driving license, vehicle documents, vehicle insurance) are needed for passing the border.

Customs / Entry

A valid passport is required for all non-EU visitors. Citizens of the European Union countries and the UK can enter Hungary with a valid passport or with their National Identity Card. Visas are not required for citizens of the European Union. For non-EU citizens more information can be obtained from the Hungarian Embassy or Consulate in your country. If you need a visa, a personal invitation letter may be necessary, which you can ask for from the local organizers.

Recently, there is no additional entry regulation to Hungary due to COVID-19 pandemic. Travellers should check all regulations closer to the time of travelling and for Hungary also for the transit countries.
